The Role of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Culture in Today’s Rapidly Changing Environment

2020 was a year of unexpected changes. Companies became innovative and had to pivot with the times, shifting priorities and practices in order to combat COVID-19. Talent attraction and retention became even more critical for business success, and along with five distinct generations in the workplace co-existing all at once, DEI initiatives began moving into the forefront of business leaders’ minds. In this session, we will go into hands-on discussions around culture, its impact on today’s rapidly changing environment and how diversity, equity and inclusion has become more embedded into our Company’s Compensation Philosophy.

HR Advisory Principal, MCM CPAs and Advisors

Tiffany is a Principal Consultant with MCM’s HR Solutions Group and has over twenty years of experience in domestic and international HR. She is a past recipient of the Lyle Hanna Kentucky HR Spirit Award and has been recognized as a Business First 40 Under 40, one of 20 People To Know in HR, and most recently as one of Louisville’s 2021 Enterprising Women.

Tiffany serves on several Boards & Committees including Brightside, Boy Scouts, the Kentucky Chamber’s Talent Pipeline Management Initiative, the Substance Use Recovery Task Force, the Workforce Board, and the Worksite Wellness Council of Louisville.  She is the 2021 GLI Talent Steering Committee Chair and serves as both a Regional Board Member for the American Lung Association as well as the Local Chair for the Kentucky Chapter.

Tiffany currently serves on the Kentucky SHRM State Council Board as the KYSHRM Scholarship & Foundation Director and she currently serves as the Compensation Chair for LSHRM where she’s a held numerous roles including Past President.

Tiffany graduated with a BA from Northwestern University and an MSIR from Loyola University in Chicago. She holds several certifications including being a Certified Compensation Professional, a SHRM-Certified Professional, an HRCI Professional in Human Resources, and has formally served as a CNA – Certified Nursing Assistant.

Kim Maynard, Senior Executive Compensation Analyst

Kim has worked for Valvoline since March 2017 in Executive Compensation. As the Senior Executive Compensation Analyst, she manages the annual short-term and long-term incentive processes, annual increase program, assists with the annual proxy and equity reporting, and prepares the materials for the Compensation Committee meetings of the Board of Directors.

Prior to joining Valvoline, Kim graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Finance and worked in compensation at Archer Daniels Midland Company in Illinois and Tempur Sealy in Lexington.

Even though she grew up in Texas, she considers the Lexington area home and enjoys golfing and spending time with her husband and 8 year old son.

Compensation Governance and Why it is Important

Most organizations have some form of governance, particularly around compensation actions. It’s up to HR to determine the degree of controls to have in place.

Think about governance like either a two lane highway with limited access, lower speed limit and limited opportunities to pass versus an interstate highway. Which do you prefer? Which would you leaders prefer? What will your culture support?

Compensation is much more strategic today and our leaders need our help in making decisions to hire, develop and reward key talent. As HR professionals, let’s spend our time advising our leaders to make informed decisions that impact their talent.

Steven Gebben VP, Total Rewards at BJC HealthCare

Steve is an experienced Human Resources professional with more than 25 years of compensation and benefits experience and has held leadership positions in Fortune 500 companies. He has extensive experience in designing compensation plans, healthcare strategy, acquisition integration strategy, and benefits strategy. In his leadership roles, his focus has been leading and developing global strategy and implementing a total rewards vision aimed at providing employee engagement, retention of key talent and rewards that lead to effective business and individual performance.

A few of his accomplishments include successfully leading transformation initiatives through mergers and acquisitions, designing and implementing a career framework, developing and implementing healthcare and retirement strategies, and designing market competitive short-term and long-term incentive plans.

Steve is currently leading Total Rewards for BJC HealthCare in St. Louis, MO. Prior to joining BJC, Steve led Total Rewards at Save A Lot (St. Louis, MO), DST Systems (Kansas City, MO), Eastman Chemical (Kingsport, TN) and Sara Lee Corporation (Chicago, IL and St. Louis, MO).

Steve received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Master of Public Administration from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

After years of trying to tackle Valvoline’s time off policies, Valvoline implemented a new Paid Time Off (PTO) program in January of 2021. Not only did the new program result in financial gain, it enabled Valvoline to increase their offerings and market competitiveness. Join Jennifer Mart, Director of Global Benefits for Valvoline, to find out what made the difference this time around, how they managed the changed and overall lessons learned.

Jenn Mart – Director, Global Benefits, Valvoline

Jenn currently serves as the Director, Global Benefits, for Valvoline, a leading engine and automotive maintenance company. In this role, Jenn leads the design, implementation and administration of Valvoline’s global health, welfare and retirement plans. She is passionate about educating and streamlining, while keeping a customer focused mindset. During her 9 years with Valvoline, Jenn worked to establish the benefit program during its transition to a publicly traded company in 2016 and led key retirement initiatives such as annuity purchase transactions and pension buy-out opportunities. Prior to joining Valvoline’s HR department, Jenn previously had responsibility for specialty accounting and corporate reporting.

Jenn is a graduate of Miami University of Ohio and an inactive Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Jenn began her career in audit with PricewaterhouseCoopers and uses that background to bring a different perspective to her role. Outside of work she is commonly seen running after 3 young kids and enjoying the outdoors.

Jim Trujillo is a Certified Financial Planner® and a Professional Plan Consultant for ARGI. Since 2013, he has provided personal financial planning services to individuals, and retirement planning services to business owners, plan administrators and retirement plan committees. A focus of his is customizing financial wellness programs for over 75 companies throughout Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio.

As a former actor and graduate of the University of Kentucky’s Theatre program, he utilizes his thespian training to promote participant education and engagement through large group presentations, webinars, videos and one-on-one meetings with participants. His passion based in educating individuals on their financial wellness and helping them achieve their personal financial goals.
